High Power Electrical Engineer
Job description
Joby Energy seeks an EE with high voltage, high power conversion experience. You will develop prototype power converters of varying power and voltage levels. Design circuitry for conversion from turbine generator output to intermediate DC and for DC-HVDC conversion, under weight and reliability constraints. Expected switching rates are in the 10-100kHz range, power levels from 10-100kW.
You will work closely with a strong committed team of aerodynamics, mechanics, propulsion, and energy engineers and support them by developing HVDC power conversion systems to the same extreme standards of performance and reliability.
Our quick turn, prototype environment requires a self starter who loves working in a team environment with fast design, build, and test cycles.
Qualifications
- Bachelors, Masters or PhD in electrical engineering or a related physics/engineering discipline;
- Experience with high power (>20kW) conversion using advanced power semiconductors;
- Experience with high voltage (>5kV) design;
- Strong practical prototyping background;

Electro/Mechanical Technician
Job description
Joby Energy seeks an electrical/mechanical assembly and testing technician. Electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, machining, and/or RC aircraft backgrounds are pluses.

- Carbon and fiberglass composite assembly and repair;
- Wire harness fabrication, testing, and repair;
- Electrical connector crimping and assembly (Molex SL, picoblade, DB9, etc);
- Permanent-magnet, brushless AC motor and controller testing;
- Soldering (through-hole and surface-mount).
Composites Technician
Job description
Joby Energy seeks a Composites Technician to fabricate and assemble composite parts using epoxy resins, fiberglass, carbon and Kevlar fabrics, structural adhesives, rivets, and threaded and blind fasteners.
Our quick turn, prototype environment requires a self starter who loves working in a team environment with fast design, build, and test cycles.
Duties
- Perform tasks to fabricate Composite aircraft parts, accessories, and trim according to specifications;
- Cuts fiberglass or graphite cloth to size, following template or blueprints, using cutting machine, scissors, or knife;
- Marks identifying information on material and assembles materials in kits for subsequent laminating;
- Applies layers of impregnated cloth or prepreg onto mold or fixture in predetermined ply sequence, and presses cloth to fit contours of mold, smooth surface, and remove air pockets and excess resin, using squeegee, scraper, or spatula;
- Fits and laps ends of cloth, using scissors or knife;
- Encases laminate in bagging material and bleeder cloth, attaches vacuum bagging apparatus, such as thermocouples, probes, and vacuum connections, to mold or bonding fixture, and exhausts air from vacuum bag to seal laminate for curing;
- Tests seal on vacuum bagging apparatus, using leak detector;
- Trims, drills, grind, sands, and finishes cured parts to specifications, using templates, fixtures, hand tools, and power tools;
- Pre-fits and assembles cured parts into assemblies or subassemblies, using jigs, fixtures, power tools, and fasteners, such as rivets and bolts;
- Tend oven to cure/unload parts;
- May be designated by type of plastic or specific activity involved as Bagger, Composite Assembler, Composite Bond Worker, Composite Laminator, Composite Lay-up Worker, Composite Trim;
- Composite finishing such as applying filler and primer; sand till smooth;
- Drilling of close tolerance holes, follow and accurately fill out and complete work orders for the assemblies;
- Will be required to assure that completed work complies with FAA regulations customer requirements, and company specifications;
- Responsibility to keep scrap at minimum levels;
- Assist with development of workbooks, which layout the processes to complete the manufacturing of composite panels;
- Must have the ability to read and understand detailed, manufacturing work orders, engineering process instructions and drawings;
- Must be able to use hand tools, such as rollers, paper cutters, scissors, x-acto knives, electric heat gun and fixtures, such as molds and mandrels;
- Ability to use calipers, micrometers and precision scales;
- Must be able to perform lay-up, trim, cutting and sanding operations, as well as lift tools and assemblies;
- Must be able to bend, stoop, and squat; and to operate various types of power tools.
Motor Control and Embedded Systems Engineer
Job description
Joby Energy seeks a systems engineer who will design and implement a motor and generator control system for high-efficiency propulsion and power generation for high-power reactive wind turbines.
You will work closely with a strong committed team of aerodynamics, mechanics, propulsion, and energy engineers and support them by developing embedded flight control and communication to the same extreme standards of performance and reliability.
Duties include research, evaluation, development and application of new processes and methods. You will be responsible for establishing and conducting testing routines, executing project plans, documenting results. You will establish operational objectives and assignments.
You will be multi-talented, adaptable, show excellent judgment in evaluating, selecting, adapting, modifying criteria and experienced in solving a wide range of problems.
Qualifications
- Masters degree in Computer Science;
- Experience with embedded systems software engineering;
- Experience with synchronous motor control systems;
- Experience with control systems;
- Experience with field vector/torque control of synchronous machines;
- Experience with ARM Cortex microcontroller architecture;
- Experience with the GNU ARM toolchain;
- Excellent knowledge of C programming language;
- Computers, embedded calculators, real time programming skills;
